Biography

Martyn delivers a range of theory and practice modules across all levels of Lincoln School of Film and Media undergraduate and postgraduate programs, specialising in digital media, film theory and multi-camera production.

Martyn’s research is focussed on digital scholarship and curriculum redesign. He is a founding member of the co_LAB research network, which was set up to develop more open, interdisciplinary and collaborative pedagogical frameworks. Martyn is particularly interested in blended learning, exploring the use of digital technology to enhance teaching and learning.

Martyn is also an active researcher in the field of media theory, digital culture and networked technologies and has contributed to several international academic conferences and symposiums. Much of Martyn’s research is focussed on ‘non-representational’, ‘object-oriented’ and ‘ecological’ frameworks of media analysis, which are less concerned with what media mean (what they represent), and more concerned with what they ‘do’ (how they might intervene, affect and shape social relations). Martyn is currently developing a critical/theoretical framework that ascribes agency to digital media, mapping the role of technological processes and assemblages in the operation of power, labour and subjectivity within contemporary networked societies.
