Use of Collaborative Application and Interactive Worksheet for Media Literacy Education
The purpose of media literacy education is to teach critical analysis of media and to broaden learners experience of media. For example, critical analysis of media includes identifying point of view, examining patterns of media representation and detecting bias and propaganda. In this study, we are using an internet-based collaboration application, along with interactive worksheet, to teach media literacy at a Japanese university lecture course setting. We will demonstrate how we are utilizing the application and interactive worksheet to support collaborative group work. We decided to customize Microsoft Office
s Excel and Microsoft Sharepoint. In the course, students first acquire skills to critically analyze films, and later are asked to create interactive digital-film analysis reports using interactive worksheet. The advantages of using them are 1) easy structuring of group work to support collaboration 2) easy management of individual and group profiles 3) safe handling of video footage using VBA. Lessons learned and future plan will also be discussed.
