A Global Classroom Project: Teaching Virtual Collaboration Between Writers and Translators
Abstract: This presentation describes a global classroom project developed by faculty members at the University of Central Florida (UCF) in the United States and the Université de Paris (UP) in France. In Spring 2020, students in an MA program in Technical Communication at UCF collaborated with students in a Master’s program in Translation at UP. The presenter will discuss the data collected from student reflections and from team transcripts. The discussion of the results will focus on student learning; it will examine how students developed strategies for addressing the challenges of virtual collaboration and how they developed the skills and competencies needed for their respective professions. The presenter will discuss the understanding students gained of another discipline and how their cultural awareness and knowledge was enhanced as a result of the project. Finally, the presenter will offer suggestions for finding collaborative partners in other disciplines and for structuring and planning projects.
