Abstract: The Roundtable presentation will inform participants about a new initiative at Sunset Elementary School to introduce coding into the Prek-grade 2 integrated curriculum. Students at Sunset Elementary participate in an International Baccalaureate – Primary Years Programme (PYP). Young learners receive an inquiry-led, transdisciplinary framework of instruction. The programme challenges students to problem-solve and think for themselves while assuming responsibility for their learning. PYP learners are characterized as thinkers, inquirers, knowledgeable, risk-takers, communicators, and reflective. The learner characteristics correspond with 21st-century learner skills and empower students to take action to create real-world contexts.
