Using a Mathematics-Focused Technology Course to Support Teacher Learning
Abstract: In this session we will share details of a mathematics-focused technology course (including student work examples) that develops prospective teachers’ understandings of how to utilize and critique online tools to help K-12 students learn math. We will also quickly share a few of the online learning platforms and mathematics-focused websites that we use in the course (e.g., ThingLink, GeoGebra, EdReady, Pear Deck). This course includes scaffolded lessons through which teachers: (1) expand their understandings of current standards and mathematical practices (Common Core for Mathematics) and foundational mathematics content, (2) conceptualize and develop K-12 mathematics lessons that integrate technology in innovative and relevant ways, (3) experience mathematics learning utilizing an example of a current online platform from the perspective of both a student and a teacher, and (4) create a collaborative learning environment through which they are challenged to reflect critically on current and future pedagogical practices that integrate STEAM disciplines.
