STEM Career and Interest Development for Middle Grade Learners
Abstract: Career development in STEM can occur throughout learners, elementary and secondary years. Middle school grades are pivotal years for career exploration. Engaging middle school learners in active learning experiences can contribute to their future career plans. A month-long summer STEM camp was conducted employing active learning strategies utilizing technology. Positive youth development outcomes included: (a) expanded knowledge of STEM careers, and (b) increased technical skills. Descriptive results from the Measure of Attitude to Mathematics, Science, and Engineering results indicated that the learners agreed liking a STEM position that leveraged technical skills. All participants indicated a desire to pursue college at the end of the STEM camp.
