Abstract: Gaming is a highly popular source of leisure and entertainment around the world. Billions of people engage in video game play in numerous ways daily, but little research is dedicated to understanding who gamers are or why they play. This current study will specifically focus on two key questions, first, what is gaming culture? Second, what is the player experience? For this research, the method of chronicling or journaling past and present gaming experiences will be used for comparison to experiences uncovered through a literature review as well as thematic data analysis using firsthand experiences. Results are expected to show that gaming culture is still ambiguous, Reexamining the question will not provide a clear answer beyond a means of self-identification. Also, the player experience is one of extended family and brotherhood. The player experience serves as an emotional extension of being, where real emotions are explored, and challenges are faced. Heavy among the themes displayed in reflection upon the player experience is the notion of bonding, inclusion, and the strong yearning for an encompassing social space. Video Game culture exists both locally and globally and can be hard to define or even understand. More research needs to be done involving the individual experience of video game players, with the experience itself being the center of the study rather than a secondary factor.
