Incorporating Trauma-Informed Equity-Centered Teaching Practices into the Classroom: Faculty Collaboration
Abstract: A number of scholars and mental health professionals have noted the prevalence of trauma among college students (Carello, 2014; Frazier et al., 2009; Read et al., 2011; Smyth et al., 2008 ). Pre-COVID research reveals that anywhere from 66% - 85% of college students report lifetime exposure to one or more traumatic events (Carello & Butler, 2014; Frazier et al., 2009; Read et al., 2011; Smyth et al., 2008). Educators are not therapists; however, they need to be aware of how course content can impact students. Further, they need to understand that some students, due to their social identities, are more likely to be traumatized (CDC, 2022).
