Demystifying the Academic Job Market: An Interactive Panel Session for Aspiring Faculty and Career Changers
Abstract: Navigating the complexity of the academic job market can be quite confusing. Moreover, locating positions, interviewing in-person and online, and negotiating offers can be quite intimidating. In this panel, four faculty members with over 50 years combined experience as full-time faculty and search committee members will address different variables shaping the current academic job search and provide insights to support graduate students, early career faculty, and career changers who seek faculty positions. The four faculty member panelists each represent a variety of academic backgrounds, experiences, and institutional types. Panelists will deliver brief presentations on: 1) identifying positions that are the right fit, 2) crafting application and dossier materials, 3) preparing for in-person/online interviews and job/research talks, and 4) negotiating salary, course load, rank and research packages. Following the brief presentations, panelists and attendees will engage in an open question-and-answer session, with resources to assist attendees with their academic job search being shared.
