Abstract: With the widespread availability and use of digital technologies in today’s classrooms, there is an increasing need for teachers to know how to design digital instructional materials for use in their lessons. In particular, preservice teachers need to know how to appropriately incorporate visuals into these materials. The purpose of this study was to examine the extent to which the preservice teachers were utilizing visuals in their self-created digital instructional materials for the following purposes: for active use in instruction, to support instruction, and as decoration. Results indicate that the preservice teachers could use images for a variety of purposes and that images were commonly used for both instructional and supportive purposes. However, the number of images used by the preservice teachers indicates that they require support in understanding how to design digital instructional materials that are appropriate for elementary-age learners. The findings of this study provide evidence of preservice elementary teachers’ visual literacy competencies and learning needs and offer teacher educators a foundation for developing guidelines and instruction that can support prospective elementary teachers in creating and using digital instructional materials effectively in their lessons.
