Widening the Global Access of Artificial Intelligence (AI) Literacy Curriculum through the Participation of Day of AI
Abstract: Artificial Intelligence has been evolving and becoming a transformational force in the global economy. To introduce AI-related applications and tools, K-12 teachers play a critical role to introduce foundational AI concept and demystify the use of AI. Teachers could further widen access to encourage students to explore AI applications in various industries, and critically reflect the promises and harms of AI in real-world scenarios. However, challenges exist as teachers might have limited access to the resources and material as entry points to introduce the essential AI ideas. To scale the project and leverage more learning opportunities for educators, the Day of AI (DoAI) as an institutional wide initiative invited global educators to use, implement, and adopt AI literacy curriculum in the local classrooms. All participating teachers have access to four one-week curriculum modules based on different grade bands through the online platform. The study utilized convergent mixed methods to examine the effectiveness of DoAI resources to support global educators to utilize and implement in classroom teaching. A total of 108 educators participated in the study internationally. Quantitatively, teacher questionnaire showed the positive impacts of DoAI resources for educators in classroom teaching. Qualitatively, teacher interview showed the appreciated values of DoAI resources to integrate AI literacy concepts and ideas in classroom pedagogical practices.
