Abstract: This paper explores using TPACK as a best practice framework that educators can use to help students achieve long-term subject-matter retention when print content is transferred to digital content that uses modalities such as extended reality (XR) or artificial intelligence (AI). This topic is timely and significant, especially in distance education and learning, as educators increasingly seek technologies to engage students at a more authentic level using technologies that mirror what one may encounter in a real-world setting. These technologies often take traditional print content and transfer it to a digital platform which necessarily alters the semantic perception of content, whether that alteration is intentional or unintentional. Therefore, teaching and learning are impacted as now educators must be deliberate in helping students’ perceptive realities based on the intended learning outcomes through conscious teaching of multimodal literacy skills. This paper will explore the Technological, Pedagogical, and Content Knowledge (TPACK) framework as a scaffold for educators to use when teaching multimodal literacy skills. The outcomes presented in this paper will be for participants to understand which domains and subdomains of the TPACK model can be married to a specific multimodal literacy skill to help inform perceptive positionalities and realities between print and digital content aligned with Levels of Use (LoU) and self-regulation.
