Abstract: Technology has made it so that the school is introduced to students and parents online before they are introduced in person. Students also understand their world via social networks and other contexts which reach from the outside world into the school environment to form what could be termed an “edu-social network”. Through this lens, what messages do schools seem to send to those students via their online presence, and their online policies? If middle school students received a friend request from their school, and the students checked them out by their websites, online mission statements, and online dress codes, would the students accept the friend request? Based on an examination of those factors from six American middle schools in 2021, the requests might be declined. From this analysis, schools might find some places to invest efforts at ensuring that the online messages are consistent with their values.
