Abstract: With limited in-person courses available during the COVID-19 pandemic, many high school students and teachers turned to online resources that were readily accessible to be utilized. However, there have not been clear guidelines to help high school students’ and teachers’ decisions on what online courses to choose and how to use them. For that reason, the purposes of this paper are (1) to discuss a high school student’s use of an edX online course for their Python programming skill development and (2) to provide preliminary guidelines that high school computer science teachers may consider integrating into their teaching. The paper concludes that the most helpful aspects of the course were the clear requirement analysis, which allows students to be more efficient in their programming process, and the use of participant discussion boards that provided insight into alternative ways of homework completion.
