Abstract: The goal of this project is to increase awareness and strengthen the use of primary source documents among pre-service teachers. Analyzing primary sources in various formats such as letters, maps, drawings, newspaper articles, motion pictures, and sound recordings can deepen not only content knowledge but also students’ understanding of the human condition. This presentation will report on how the project was implemented and its impact in Social Studies methods courses that aimed to help increase pre-services teachers’ content knowledge and pedagogical skills in utilizing primary sources as an instructional tool. The findings suggests that participants were very positive about the use of primary sources in the lessons and in the classroom and the use of Library of Congress digital collections and document analysis tool questions.
