Humanize the online learning environment to motivate, support, and retain first generation, socioeconomically diverse students, and students from varying cultural groups in higher education
Abstract: Higher education institutions have been struggling with decreases in enrollment prior to the pandemic (Bawa, 2016). The impact of the pandemic has magnified the problem and institutions of higher education are trying to cope with the effects. Student enrollment has decreased substantially and those who are still enrolled are struggling with a slew of challenging that impacts their educational success (Seery, Barreda, Hein, &Hiller, 2021). This proposed roundtable discussion will address factors contributing to, high attrition rates, low motivation, a lack of self- efficacy. The presenter will present measures that could be taken to support first generation, culturally diverse students, and those from low socioeconomic backgrounds with low self- efficacy and lack motivation. Attendees will leave this roundtable with read to use strategies that can be implemented in both their face-to-face, and online classes. The author welcomes a discussion on this topic and look forward to sharing the results of the findings of this study.
