Abstract: Not all students are confident in their technological skills. Despite the broadly saluted growth of the use of digitalized teaching practices due to the pandemic, research has evidenced that some students enjoyed remote learning while others suffered. It is known that students’ preference for digital tools or books/pen & paper varies, and this difference may have impacted how much they perceived to learn during the school closures. Therefore, in this study we used multivariate statistics to analyze the preference of 28 437 students for digital or pen & paper mode when they are assigned to 1) search for answers for the tasks, 2) write a synthesis, or 3) judge the reliability of information. Based on survey data collected in April 2021, we also evaluated whether students would prefer to submit their answers as video/audio form or would like to work alone. Exploratory factor analysis indicates that students preferring digital tools seek collaboration with friends and do not want to work alone. Correlations between preferences and perceptions of learning during the school closures show that students who preferred books/pen & paper perceived learning less during the school closures. The results are important since there are clearly students who need support for adjusting to digital mode. It would be essential for teachers to recognize students who may need help to develop their digital skills and confidence, as digital competence is required in future studies.
