Abstract: Honors Equity in a Global World: The Ethics of Care and Cultural Humility through a Hawaiian and Irish Worldview One key element in higher education Honours learning and talent development is creating safe teaching spaces for students to explore, to think critically and creatively, and to ask questions. Creating environments for students to become empowered through critically examining the synergy between practical and emotional choices, and the consequent interface with academic pursuits and development is vital. An Honors Faculty member will discuss developing theoretical approaches emergent in daily praxis, as related to the Ethics of Care, Cultural Humility, Hawaiian and Irish Worldviews, and Global Awareness (Danso, 2016; Delworth & Seeman, 1984; Fisher-Borne et al., 2015). The possible and concrete applications to Honours curriculum, teaching, advising, talent development, and empowerment will be examined.

Objectives

Review Equity in the context of Cultural Humility and Ethics of Care models Review being a Truth, Racial Healing & Transformation Fellow Provide concrete examples of this application in teaching, but also advising Discuss how Equity plays a role in effective online pedagogy and teaching Discuss how the student experience can be shaped when equity is front and center as an integrated curriculum element. Provide "take home" praxis examples and inspire discussion of same.

Topical Outline

The possible applications to Honours curriculum, teaching, advising, talent development, and empowerment will be examined.

Qualifications

Dr. Siobhán Ní Dhonacha is an Faculty Specialist with the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa Honors Program and Regents and Presidential Scholars, and a Truth, Racial Healing and Transformation (TRHT) Fellow. TRHT is a higher education W.K. Kellogg Foundation funded initiative housed in the office of the UHM Provost, Native Hawaiian Place of Learning Advancement Office, with an emphasis on Aloha ʻĀina. Indigenous Irish, Dr. Siobhán was born and raised in Dublin, Ireland.Dr. Siobhán studied in New York and London, and then went on to earn a B.A. in Political Science and Politics of Theatre from Western Washington University, an M.F.A. in Theatre/Playwriting at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa (UHM), a PhD in Education from the College of Education at UHM with a focus on the Ethics of Care, Higher Education Policy/Philosophy, and Student Success Strategies, and a COLT Graduate Certificate in online learning and teaching from the UHM College of Education, and an AAAE Certificate in Effective Strategies for Learning & Teaching Online Summer 2020. Teaching since 1995, Dr. Siobhán has worked with students in Washington State, New York, and Hawaiʻi, and at UH since 2009.
