Abstract: This paper addresses the need for high quality, interactive assessments in the online environment and provides a framework for designing and implementing online assessment plans for individual online courses. Research suggests that assessment plans be linked to instruction, incorporate multiple measures of student knowledge, and utilize regular and systematic formative and summative assessments that provide high quality feedback for the benefit of students and instructors. The limited research related specifically to online assessment suggests that there are concerns about both the quantity and quality of assessment in online courses. This paper provides a framework for designing assessment plans in the online environment that incorporate regular, high quality, and technology-based formative and summative assessments that enable instructors to provide relevant and timely feedback to students
