Abstract: This paper describes a set of specific examples for how to engage prospective elementary school teachers in asynchronous online mathematics methods courses. These examples create situations in which preservice teachers: 1) engage with mathematical problems themselves; 2) notice the ways that students engage with mathematics and what we can learn from their comments and behaviors; and 3) participate in micro-teaching episodes. All of these techniques are familiar to instructors teaching these courses in face-to-face formats, however, improved online tools allow for these sound pedagogical practices to be implemented more effectively in asynchronous online formats.
