But, I'm NOT the Tech Teacher!: Integrating Technology for Elementary Education Teacher Candidates

Abstract: The Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP) has drafted an updated handbook for initial-level licensure education preparation programs where technology is a cross-cutting theme throughout (CAEP, 2018). Educator preparation provider programs (EPPs) must now determine how best to effectively educate teacher candidates on available technology tools and integrate them into instructional practice. Knowing classrooms today are made up of “digital natives,” it is imperative that teacher preparation programs provide extensive and rigorous coursework not only through the few technology courses offered but also across all program courses. Instead of trying to keep up with increasingly changing technology tools, it seems most appropriate to shift the focus to technology processes: things you can do with technology tools to integrate with instruction. Shifting the focus to processes that remain relatively consistent, teacher candidates can then find the most relevant and applicable tools that enable them to complete each of the seven technology processes.
