Abstract: In this study, we examine the three levels of learner participation according to Leader Identification Model (LIM) and analyze the pattern how students emerge as leader roles including full facilitator, transactional facilitator and attractive facilitator. Then compare the appointed leader and emerging leader in group discussion. We collect 30 students’ discussion data in three phases who are in online collaborative learning. These students are pre-service teachers enrolled in a teaching design course. Results of the data analysis show that three levels of learner participation are identified by LIM method including full participant, inbound participant and peripheral participant. And the pattern of leadership is classified by appointed and emerging leaders: dominated leader ship, shared leadership and replaced leadership.
