Abstract: Cognitive Theory of Multimedia Learning (CTML) and Virtual Reality (VR) have received much attention from practitioners and researchers in the field of education, especially in instructional design. For CTML, although it has been well-established since more than a decade ago and has been understood sufficiently among all the stakeholders, more empirical evidence is still required to determine how the principles in CTML affect learning retention. VR, being an emergent as well as innovative multimedia technology, its implementations in education are being practiced and tested in higher education settings frequently in the present decade. The purpose of this study aims to analyze and review one of the principles in CTML with regard to its application in a desktop 3D VR online orientation.
