Abstract: The widespread lack of time in the classroom also generating other challenges often prompts educators to rely on the traditional lecture-based teaching style. In an attempt to tackle the situation, a trial of the flipped classroom has been initiated as a strategy to encourage a better knowledge transfer with the ultimate goal of a greater sustainability in learning. The most recent version of the flipped classroom is an active and innovative approach to education which reverses the traditional lecture-based structure by using the technologies. The theory is now introduced at home via some of these technologies and the time saved in class is used to deepen the understanding of the theory with different types of activities. In such a flipped classroom setting, the roles of the educators and the students also change: the educator acts as a guide while students become active learners who are accountable for their own learning. The implementation of this strategy for two academic terms in an English as a second language university course was used to experiment the reorganization of knowledge by re-examining the information and communication process through a different teaching method. In light of the positive qualitative results of the implementation, this presentation will demonstrate the benefits of the flipped classroom as an active teaching strategy and will call for several changes such as the renewal of teaching practices and interdisciplinarity.
