Abstract: Conventional virtual reality systems have been out of reach of many K-12 and higher ed educators due to high costs and technological complexity, as well as difficulty with finding educational resources to justify the use of this emerging technology that has such potential to be a powerful tool for education. However, there is much that can be done in virtual reality that does not require the purchase of prohibitively expensive and highly complex hardware such as an Oculus Rift or HTC Vive. With the simple use of a smartphone, an inexpensive headset, and freely available well-designed educational resources from sources such as the BBC, we will present how it can be simple and fun to implement VR into the classroom, through sharing basic methods for ensuring mobility in the virtual world and effective presentation of information through this unconventional format, keeping students engaged and excited to learn.
