Using a mixed-methodology approach, the Building a Framework for Project Based Personalized Learning project developed a framework for creating individual learning experiences for K12 students. The objectives of the study were to develop a framework for designing and implementing personalized learning projects, to identify changes in teacher role during implementation, to document student perceptions of ability and skill within personalized learning to support their own learning goals, and to develop professional development materials related to the framework. The development of personalized learning paths required upfront organization and planning to identify the necessary scaffolding of resources and learning objects to support content development. The resulting framework for the design and implementation of personalized learning projects, lessons learned regarding shifting student and teacher roles, and professional development models for implementing the framework in other content areas are discussed.
