Share Paper: The History (and Future) of Digital Writing in Higher Education: The Case of a Writing Intensive Course for University Freshmen

Abstract: In today’s writing classrooms, as some K-12 and college-level compositions courses expand their repertoires to include web-based, digital writing, traditional practices such as highly formatted essays and prescriptive research papers remain part of far too many classrooms. To bring some perspective to the opportunities that we have now available for us, a brief bit of history is warranted, and this paper will further examine hypertext/media writing from a historical perspective, as well as through current teaching practice, combining technical, pedagogical, and rhetorical dimensions to examine the nature of hypertext/media.
