Abstract: Online environments are complex systems that often leave students feeling disconnected from instructors and peers. Feelings of disconnection are often attributed to both physical and psychological distance (Bowers & Kumar, 2015). Faculty grapple with ways to transcend the psychological distance in ways that do not consume their time and energy. This study investigated whether student perceptions of connectedness with their instructor were impacted by the type of feedback provided on assignments (typewritten versus handwritten).
