Technology Practices of Teacher Candidates during Field Experiences: What Are They Using and How Prepared Are They?
Abstract: This study explored technology practices of teacher candidates during field experiences. Participants included 84 teacher education candidates (secondary, elementary, and early childhood majors) enrolled at a rural Midwestern University. Survey questions asked about the frequency of technology use, which tools were used, a positive example of technology use, candidates’ perceived preparation levels, tools candidates said they were most prepared to use, and further training needs. Results revealed half of the teacher candidates regularly used technology in their teaching, and almost 70% stated they were well-prepared to use technology in their teaching. Respondents indicated that the Smartboard was the tool they used most frequently and also named the Smartboard as the tool for which they needed the additional training. Candidates provided multiple examples of positive use of technology. Recommendations for future practice were shared.
