Abstract: Distance delivery models for teacher training have become essential in geographically-remote areas, such as the Pacific Islands. Yet taking into account the unique cultural traditions of these communities as well as their lack of on-site technological resources are key factors in developing effective instruction. The College of Education at the University of Hawa‘i has been prominent in research and implementation of instructional strategies well-suited for remote communities in the Pacific. This paper examines the foundational principles of culturally responsive pedagogy and its implementation in several distance-delivery teacher training programs at the University of Hawai‘i.
