Are You with It? Redefining Teacher Withitness for the Online Medium

Abstract: The purpose of this presentation is to discuss the skillset often referred to as teacher withitness and to reexamine its application for the online medium. As a well-documented technique that supports student learning and class management, the practices and behaviors often associated with withitness should not be limited to teachers who work within brick and mortar classrooms. We propose online teaching strategies that mirror traditional elements of withitness when implemented in virtual environments and discuss implications for teacher education that prepares students to successfully teach within a myriad of contexts.
