Abstract: This paper describes the use of Goodreads, a social network based around books, in a high school classroom for students labeled “struggling readers.” Using Goodreads to connect the students to an authentic audience of fiction readers increased the evidence of Common Core-based academic literacy elements in their book reviews. This case study shows how literacy-centered technology might be used in English language arts instruction to improve outcomes for struggling students. Shifting the focus from decontextualized skills to social practices of a broader community could lead to greater engagement and, in turn, improve academic literacy as well.
