International Students’ Learning and Strategy Use When Reading Electronic Texts on Tablets
Abstract: This study investigated five college-level international students’ reading electronic texts on tablets. The purpose of this study was to identify these students’ learning experiences of reading electronic texts and their strategies in diverse contexts. The findings showed that the international students had diverse learning experiences about using a tablet and appreciated the use of this device. The students used eight significant strategies: (a) accessing an electronic text, (b) accessing an application, (c) dialoguing, (d) evaluating the text and deciding what to read, (e) inferring from the text, (f) making a connection, (g) previewing and setting up the purpose, and (h) using technology skills. Based on these findings, I will discuss and draw conclusions about the international students’ experiences of using tablets and their strategies. I will also provide implications to facilitate the successful use of tablets in education for both teachers and international students.
