W6: Collaborating with Data in STEM Classrooms
Date
March 21, 2016
Time:
1:30 PM-5:00 PM
Descriptiopn
Students are required by current frameworks to learn data analysis skills. Technologies for data collection and visualization play a key role in the acquisition of these skills. In this workshop, attendees will be introduced to a collaborative data collection and visualization system purpose-built for middle and high school STEM classes. This system, iSENSE, was developed at the University of Massachusetts Lowell with direct feedback from teachers and students. iSENSE provides a shared repository of projects and data sets from all STEM fields and provides tools for data-driven classroom activities. Attendees will be given a hands-on introduction to iSENSE by engaging in classroom activities. Attendees will explore existing “curated” data sets and contribute new data using laptops and mobile devices. Instructors will lead a discussion about how this technology has been integrated into existing curricula and how it may be integrated into participants’ classrooms.
