Abstract: In this presentation we will discuss a study being conducted in two large urban school districts in which students create short mathematics videos using digital ink and screen capture software. Data collected to date shows high student engagement. The presentation will include video clips of teachers and students describing various aspects of their experiences related to student engagement as they participate in the media-making process. This session may be especially interesting for teachers and students in any area where hand- -written notation, drawing or symbolism is a key means for communicating (e.g., mathematics, art, science, computer science). The overall study project is connected to a Fulbright research fellowship in sub-Saharan Africa and to a National Science Foundation Cyberlearning project in California and in Nevada.
