Abstract: This paper describes a project that required online students in a graduate program to call their instructor on their smart/cell phone during the first week of class. The reason was to encourage students to call their instructor when experiencing extended difficulty concerning content so that just-in-time assistance could be provided to reduce extended email conversations. Results of this strategy found an increase in call rate from 5 calls to 26 calls per semester, with the majority of calls coming in after standard work hours and weekends, reducing the transactional distance in the class.
