Abstract: The anticipatory set that occurs prior to direct instruction establishes the tone for learning, but modeling the anticipatory set can be problematic in teacher education courses. Creative uses of YouTube videos can lead to valuable instruction in higher education as well as in K-12 classrooms. An "aha moment" occurred while showing a video of a baby bat being cared for. The class of elementary education students was mesmerized and the ensuing discussion sparked new insights into child development theories and pedagogical practices as the students became engaged in what they viewed. Although there are many videos geared toward traditional subject matter, hidden YouTube treasures also exist. Engaging students through short videos at the beginning of a class period has the potential to involve them in becoming active in their own learning. This presentation will demonstrate planned spontaneity that leads to student-led instruction.
