Abstract: This paper reviews the theoretical underpinnings of discourse analysis and how this approach has been used in regards to educational technology. Applying discourse analysis to the Blackboard Collaborate tool for online synchronous sessions demonstrates how design of educational tools includes inherent Discourses about the manner in which such tools can or should be used. The usefulness of this technique for educators and designers is discussed, describing how technology can reinforce or reimagine traditional educational Discourses.
