Abstract: This paper explores the state of currently available educational Augmented Reality (AR) applications for mobile devices. AR is broadly defined as the use of a technological medium to “overlay” information on the physical world. Using a scale designed to categorize the educational purpose and function of AR technologies, this paper describes a process for evaluating the educational power and intent of the AR applications. Further, this paper lays out conclusions about the relative strengths and weaknesses of the current educational AR apps.
