Abstract: In a recent investigation of learning in a midwestern school district, researchers used focus groups, video conferencing and social media to explore the question, "What if school was invented today?". The study lasted seven months and included the voices of more than 70 stakeholders. This presentation discusses the ways in which technologies such as social media and video conferencing supported the design based research that characterized the study. As in all design based research, the study relied on rich iterative analysis and multiple layers of investigation. Technology in the form of social media and video conferencing extended the data collection, and investigation in the study. Curating activities on social media cataloged the work of more than 10 focus groups and 70 participants that were able to give voice to the concept of “the school for today”.
