Using Free Online Videos in the English Language Classroom
Abstract: When used appropriately the integration of video into the language classroom has many educational benefits. The benefits may be especially apparent for language learners who rely on visuals and contextualized situations (Sherman, 2003; Walker & White, 2013). Harris (2003) argues that non-verbal communication is an essential part of everyday communication and aids in language comprehension. The visuals found in audiovisuals reinforce the audible content and facilitate listening comprehension (Gromik, 2012; Sherman, 2003; Webb, 2011; Weyers, 1999). With so many accessible, free video websites, it may seem overwhelming to visit each one and determine which of those are best suited for language educators’ needs. The sites YouTube EDU, TED-Ed, and WatchKnowLearn were selected by the presenters for their quality and quantity of free educational videos. The presenters will offer descriptions of how the features of each website can be used to support English language instruction.
