Abstract: Abstract. With more and more institutions of higher learning offering online programs, educators, facilitators, and instructional designers are looking for effective methods to promote engagement and enrichment in online learning settings, using mechanisms such as discussion topics. Asynchronous online discussions represent the heart of many online courses and are the primary method to promote collaboration and foster learner discourse in the online classroom. This presentation discusses evidence-based research on effective design, development, and assessment of online discussions, and provides guidance and recommendations for the creation of meaningful asynchronous communication activities.
