Abstract: Students are more likely to engage in science learning activities when given the opportunity to work on a real project, particularly a project that will have a meaningful impact in society (Reiser, 2004). This study analyzes the potential of 3D scanning technology in middle and high school to scaffold the development of science literacy while contributing to broader 3D digitization and big data initiatives. Middle and high school teachers were invited to participate in a two-day pilot workshop where they were introduced to the technology and the science concepts associated with the scanned specimen. Our results indicate that teachers are ...
