Abstract: Image is the way a person appears to others, and for the nursing profession, the way that the profession appears to other disciplines and to the general public, the consumers of health care. Nursing’s professional imagine is integral for the public to feel safe under the care of a registered nurse. The image of the profession impacts recruitment of students, the view of the public, funding for nursing education and research, relationships with healthcare professionals, government agencies, and ultimately, the profession’s self-identity. Social media can be a powerful tool for communicating, influencing, and educating (Finkelman & Kenner, 2012). However, there are many pitfalls of social media that have the potential to put the professional image of nursing at risk. Utilizing Facebook as a platform for teaching about the professional image allows students to explore social media from a professional context while being aware of its inherent risks and benefits.
