Designing Online Case-Based Discussions to Promote Students’ Instructional Design Skills
Abstract: The increasing popularity of online programs in higher education underscores a need to design better instructional environments to improve students’ learning. Fifteen students enrolled in an introductory instructional design course from an Educational Technology master’s program participated in this study. The study explored three strategies for creating more interactive learning environments centered on case-based discussions: the creation of groups of students to lead the online discussions, the integration of VoiceThread as a Web 2.0 tool that allows the presentation of content, and the use of guidelines to help students to analyze cases in instructional design. To determine the impact of these strategies, authors assessed students’ analysis of four case studies and administered a course evaluation at the end of the course.
