How to Make Your Online Course Accessible

Abstract: Our roundtable participation will focus on accessibility specifications for media and e-learning: appropriate fonts, providing alternative text to images, titling hyperlinks, creating accessible PDFs (and repairing unreadable PDFs), and captioning videos. Presenters will provide a virtual tour of an online course and discuss the various aspects of accessibility within context. Handouts include a media specification chart that addresses accessibility for e-learning according to federal guidelines.

Objectives

Goal: Educators will learn about accessibility issues and resolutions for e-learning in order to provide access to all students by applying accessibility formats and features to their own course. 1. Educators will learn how to caption media. 2. Educators will learn how to determine whether a PDF is readable by screen readers (adaptive technology). 3. Educators will learn about Sans-serif fonts types and why they are appropriate for online formats. 4. Educators will learn how to add alternative text to images and hyperlinks.

Qualifications

Sandra Rogers and Stacy Weston serve on the accessibility team at the Innovation in Learning Center at the University of South Alabama. Ms. Weston has worked as an instructional designer and trainer for eight years at the ILC. Mrs. Rogers has worked there for over a year in the same capacity. They design, develop, and deliver professional development to support student learning at the university. Ms. Weston and Mrs. Rogers are PhD students in instructional design and development at USA.
