Abstract: Research in distance education has focused on credit courses. Even though the design and delivery of non-credit courses are not fundamentally different from their credit counterpart, certain characteristics of non-credit courses require different design strategies in order to help students succeed in the course or relevant activities. Class observation and students’ feedback from an online non-credit course indicated that adult students were inactive in discussion forums and they were not good at self-regulating their own learning. To help students learn better and pass the professional certification exam, which this course prepares them for, the instructor and instructional designer of this course will redesign the discussion forums and provide self-regulation strategies and tools to students. The effects of these redesigned features on students’ satisfaction, perception, and performance in the course and the exam will also be investigated.
