Reading Comprehension Lesson: A supplementary English Course Using Concept Mapping for General Science College Students
Abstract: This study aimed at investigating the effects of teaching English reading comprehension through concept mapping. A one-group pretest-posttest design was used in the study. The purposive sampling group consists of 8 students studying for a Bachelor of Education, specializing in general science. The 20-hour lesson plan covered practice in reading comprehension in English. Cognitive skills (analyzing, combining and evaluating) were used to evaluate the knowledge gained through multiple-choices and concept mapping techniques. The t-test consisted of a pre- and a post-test which were used to verify the research question. The data analysis shows that concept mapping has a significant effect on English reading comprehension (t= 37.66, df= 7, p=0.00) The result shows that the construction of learning through the use of concept mapping assists the development of reading comprehension for L2 learners. The results of this study helps teacher to promote students’ strength in their reading comprehension ability for other content of English subjects
