Abstract: The hands on workshop will help educators understand iPad applications and creative ways to effectively use the iPad in their classrooms to support students struggling with math concepts in the primary and intermediate grades. The presenter will demonstrate how to use the iPad to improve student performance and understanding of concepts through creation, not just consumption. Participants will be encouraged to try out the applications and create sample projects they can share with their students. Concepts covered will include iTunesU, access to podcasts and videos, and using built in and purchased iPad applications to create lessons that promote learning without the traditional “drill and kill” practices. Examples and lesson ideas that support Common Core Math standards and ISTE NETS-S / T will be shared. Attendees will leave with a list of suggested iPad applications to purchase, for minimal cost or free, as well as strategies on how to integrate iPads in the classroom for both individual, small group and large group instruction.

Objectives

Participants will learn how to use mobile devices to engage students in learning mathematics concepts. Participants will gain information on applications and resources that help develop students’ math skills. Participants will learn how to use mobile devices for creation, consumption, and assessment. Participants will locate resources to access lesson plans, tools, and ideas for iPad® implementation. Participants will use suggested applications to create lessons. Participants will collaborate with peers to share ideas and experiences on mobile device implementation.

Topical Outline

Content: This session will cover the following iPad applications: Built in iPad Applications including iTunesU and iBooks Purchased Applications including: Socrative Clickers, Toontastic, Book Creator, Show Me or Educreations, as well as applications to support learning fractions, telling time and basic arithmetic, and more as previously listed. Time: The presenter’s philosophy is to be flexible based on the needs of the group. Some applications will take less than 5-minutes to explore, while others may take more time. It is possible that not all applications will be explored in-depth some applications may simply be demonstrated by the presenter. Process: The presenter will demonstrate a few applications at a time by projecting the iPad screen to a large screen at the front of the room, encouraging participants to open the application on their own devices and create or try out the application. Some applications will require more time to explore than others. When participants feel comfortable, they will either share with other participants in small groups, as partners or as a whole group.

Prerequisites

Participants will be required to search the Internet through a web browser. Participants should have the ability to navigate the app store to purchase and download applications. Participants should know how to manage and organize downloaded applications.
