Abstract: This exploratory case study examines the potential for virtual environments to support the modern student’s connection with a traditional poetic text. The modern technological environment has changed the way we interact with text and this has created a ‘disconnect’ between the social and educational environment of the modern learner. This incongruity has significant implications for English education, as teachers struggle to present poetry in a manner that accommodates the multiple literacies of the student, while conforming to the demands of the traditional curriculum. This study proposes that virtual world technology may provide a solution to these problems by providing an ‘poetic experience’ that accesses the new literacies of the modern learner. Six Leaving Certificate students participated. Findings suggest that the unimodality of traditional texts and curricular pressures create barriers to learning. However, the affordances of the virtual world environment may be harnessed to support multiple literacies and promote confidence.
